Tea gardens of Sylhet and Sreemangal

The tea landscapes around Sylhet and Sreemangal are working places, where leaf plucking, factory timing and workers’ lives meet the visitor’s view.

Rows of tea bushes follow the slopes around Sylhet and Sreemangal, interrupted by shade trees and narrow working paths. Sreemangal is in Moulvibazar district, within the wider Sylhet region. Rainfall, rolling land and well-drained soils help explain why tea growing became established across this landscape. The leaf begins a time-sensitive journey once it is plucked. For black tea, factory work commonly includes withering, rolling, oxidation and drying. How the leaf is handled affects the finished cup, so the garden and factory operate as connected parts of one process. A peaceful view from the road can conceal a demanding daily rhythm. Tea workers and their families live at the centre of this economy, with distinct community histories and cultural traditions. Visitors should remember that a garden is a workplace, seek permission where required and avoid interrupting plucking. The landscape becomes more meaningful when the people maintaining it are seen alongside the neatly trimmed bushes.
