Tangail saree weaving
Handloom weavers in Tangail produce light cotton and silk sarees with woven borders, a tradition passed down through families.
Tangail district, north-west of Dhaka, is one of Bangladesh's best-known handloom centres. Villages such as Pathrail are famous for sarees woven on pit and frame looms, with fine counts of cotton and decorative motifs worked into the border and anchal. Many weaving families trace their craft back generations, and the sarees are especially popular before Eid and Pohela Boishakh. Competition from power looms and rising yarn prices are pressures the weavers continue to face.
