Shital Pati, the Cool Mats of Sylhet

Woven from prepared murta strips, Sylhet’s shital pati brings a smooth, cool surface to household life and demands a practised eye and steady hands.

On a hot afternoon, the smooth face of a shital pati offers a welcome change from heavy bedding. The mat takes its name from this association with coolness. In the Sylhet region, makers weave it from fine strips prepared from murta, a plant that grows in wet conditions. A finished mat conceals a long sequence of careful work. Stems must be split and the strips prepared before weaving can begin. Their width and pliability matter: uneven material makes an even surface harder to achieve. As a maker crosses one strip over another, geometric patterns can emerge from the structure itself. Some mats include colour, while others let the pale material and the neatness of the weave carry the design. Shital pati serves as a household furnishing and a valued gift. The knowledge passes through practice, often within families and local communities. Buying one with attention to its maker helps shift the conversation from a decorative souvenir to a skilled occupation, dependent on both good plant material and time at the loom-free weave.
