Tagore's Shilaidaha Kuthibari

On the Padma near Kushtia, the Tagore family estate house is where Rabindranath wrote and translated many of his works.

Shilaidaha in Kushtia was part of the Tagore family's zamindari estates. From the 1890s Rabindranath Tagore spent long periods there managing the estates, travelling on the Padma in his houseboat and meeting village people whose lives entered his stories and songs. He worked on many poems here, and began translating songs from Gitanjali into English during his stays — the translations that led to his Nobel Prize in 1913. The three-storey house is now a museum, and a festival is held there each year on his birth anniversary.
