Shankhari Bazar and conch-shell craft

A narrow lane in Old Dhaka has been home for centuries to artisans who cut and carve conch-shell bangles.
Shankhari Bazar in Old Dhaka takes its name from the shankharis, Hindu artisans who make bangles and ornaments from conch shell. Tradition holds that the community settled here several centuries ago, and the lane's tall, narrow houses are among the oldest in the city. White shell bangles, or shakha, are worn by married Hindu women, so the craft is tied to religious life. The lane also comes alive with decorations during Durga Puja and other festivals.
