The ready-made garments industry
From cutting tables to cargo shipments, Bangladesh’s garment industry connects factory work, family incomes and international clothing markets.
A shirt on a shop rail abroad may begin its journey on a cutting table in Bangladesh. The ready-made garments industry turns fabric into clothing for international buyers, with major production areas around Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj and Chattogram. Knitted T-shirts and woven trousers follow different production routes, but both depend on coordinated work across many stations. Inside a factory, pattern makers, sewing operators, mechanics and quality inspectors keep an order moving. Delivery dates matter, as do access to fabric, reliable transport and the ability to meet a buyer’s specifications. The industry also supports jobs in packaging, freight and other services beyond the factory gate. For many women, garment work has opened a route into paid employment outside the home. Its everyday realities include commuting, childcare and managing household expenses. Fire safety, sound buildings, fair pay and respectful working conditions remain essential concerns wherever clothes are made.
