Rajshahi silk

Rajshahi has long been the centre of silk production in Bangladesh, from mulberry farming to finished sarees.

Silk has been produced in the Rajshahi region for centuries, and the city remains the heart of the country's sericulture. Farmers grow mulberry to feed silkworms, whose cocoons are reeled into thread and woven into fabric in factories and small workshops along the Sopura area. Rajshahi silk is known for its soft texture and is used for sarees, panjabis and scarves. The industry has faced competition from imported silk, and the Bangladesh Sericulture Development Board, based in Rajshahi, works to support it.
