The Puthia temple complex

The Puthia temple complex

Near Rajshahi, Puthia has one of the largest groups of old Hindu temples in Bangladesh, built by the Puthia zamindars.

Puthia, about 30 km east of Rajshahi, was the seat of a wealthy zamindar family. Between the 18th and 19th centuries its members built a palace and numerous temples around ponds and open lawns. The temples show several Bengali styles, from the tall Pancharatna Govinda Temple with terracotta panels to the large Shiva Temple beside the Shiv Sagar pond. Together with the restored Rajbari, they make Puthia a compact place to see the region's temple architecture.
