Panam Nagar in Sonargaon
Panam Nagar’s narrow street in Sonargaon is lined with weathered merchant houses, offering a close view of the architecture of a later trading settlement.
Panam Nagar lies in Sonargaon, southeast of Dhaka in Narayanganj district. Its best-known feature is a narrow street lined with closely spaced houses, many dating to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although Sonargaon has a much older history as a political and trading centre, these standing buildings belong largely to a later merchant settlement. The facades mix columns, arches, decorated plaster and projecting balconies. Behind them, courtyards and interior rooms once accommodated households alongside commercial activity. No two fronts are quite alike, and a slow walk reveals small differences in window shapes, railings and ornament that a sweeping photograph can miss. Age is visible in cracked surfaces and exposed brickwork. That makes the street compelling, but it also means fragile walls are not places to climb or lean against. Panam is best understood as a surviving fragment of an inhabited town, not as the complete remains of medieval Sonargaon. Keeping that distinction in mind gives the houses their own history.
