The Padma, Jamuna and Meghna

The Padma, Jamuna and Meghna

Three great rivers carry the waters of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Barak basins through Bangladesh to the Bay of Bengal.

The Ganges enters Bangladesh and becomes the Padma; the Brahmaputra's main channel is known as the Jamuna; and the Meghna gathers rivers from the north-east. The Padma and Jamuna meet near Goalundo, and their combined flow later joins the Meghna before reaching the sea. Together they build the Ganges–Brahmaputra delta, one of the largest on Earth. They bring fertile silt and fish, but also floods and riverbank erosion that can move whole villages. Bridges such as the Jamuna and Padma bridges now span them for the first time.
