Nijhum Dwip and its spotted deer
A young island off Noakhali, Nijhum Dwip is known for planted mangrove forest, herds of spotted deer and migratory birds.
Nijhum Dwip is an island in Hatiya upazila of Noakhali, formed from silt deposited at the mouth of the Meghna. The Forest Department planted mangroves there from the 1970s, and a small number of spotted deer released later multiplied into large herds. The island was declared a national park in 2001. Its mudflats attract wintering shorebirds, and its quiet villages and forest make it a destination for travellers willing to make the long journey by water.
