The National Martyrs' Memorial at Savar

Seven triangular planes rising to a peak at Savar honour those who died in the 1971 Liberation War.

The Jatiyo Smriti Soudho stands at Savar, about 35 km north-west of Dhaka. Designed by architect Syed Mainul Hossain, it was completed in 1982. Its seven concrete planes, rising in height, are often read as the seven stages of the struggle that led to independence. The memorial grounds include mass graves, lawns and a reflecting pool. On Independence Day (26 March) and Victory Day (16 December), state leaders and huge numbers of citizens come to lay flowers.
