The Mujibnagar Government of 1971

Sworn in at Baidyanathtala in Meherpur on 17 April 1971, the provisional government led the Liberation War.

After the Pakistani army's crackdown in March 1971, elected representatives formed a provisional government of Bangladesh. It was sworn in on 17 April 1971 in a mango grove at Baidyanathtala, Meherpur, which was renamed Mujibnagar. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, then imprisoned in West Pakistan, was named President, with Syed Nazrul Islam as acting President and Tajuddin Ahmad as Prime Minister. The government organised the armed forces into sectors, ran diplomacy and supported refugees, largely from bases in India. A memorial complex now stands at the site.
