Kusumba Mosque in Naogaon

Kusumba Mosque in Naogaon

Built of black stone in 1558, the Kusumba Mosque is pictured on Bangladesh's five-taka note.

The Kusumba Mosque stands beside a large pond in Manda upazila of Naogaon. Its inscription dates it to 966 AH (1558–59), during the rule of the Afghan Sultan Ghiyasuddin Bahadur Shah, and names its builder as Sulaiman. The mosque's walls are faced with grey-black stone, and its interior has a raised platform and carved mihrabs with vine and floral motifs. It is one of the finest surviving examples of late Sultanate architecture in northern Bangladesh, and its image appears on the five-taka banknote.
