Kuakata, the daughter of the sea

Kuakata, the daughter of the sea

At the southern edge of Patuakhali, Kuakata's long beach is one of the few places to watch both sunrise and sunset over the sea.

Kuakata lies on the southern tip of Patuakhali district, facing the Bay of Bengal. Its beach runs for many kilometres along the coast, and because it faces south, visitors can watch the sun rise and set over the water from the same shore — the reason it is called Sagar Kanya, the daughter of the sea. The area is home to Rakhine communities, whose Buddhist temples and weaving are part of the local character, and to fishing villages that work the bay. Cyclones and erosion are a constant challenge, and nearby mangrove patches help protect the shoreline.
