The Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge

The Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge

Opened in 1998, the bridge between Tangail and Sirajganj linked the north-west of Bangladesh to Dhaka by road and rail.

The Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge, about 4.8 km long, crosses the Jamuna river between Bhuapur in Tangail and Sirajganj. It opened in June 1998 and carries a road, a railway track, a gas pipeline and power lines — hence the word multipurpose. Before it, crossing the Jamuna meant a slow ferry journey. The bridge cut travel times between Dhaka and the northern districts, helped trade and was later renamed Bangabandhu Bridge. A separate dedicated rail bridge has since been built alongside it.
