Dhakeshwari Temple

The National Temple of Bangladesh, Dhakeshwari is closely linked with the history and even the name of Dhaka.

Dhakeshwari Temple in Old Dhaka is dedicated to the goddess Dhakeshwari, a form of Durga. Its origins are traditionally traced to the Sena period, and many people associate the goddess's name with the name of the city itself, though historians debate that link. The present buildings date from later centuries and were damaged in 1971 before being restored. Recognised as the National Temple, it is the centre of large celebrations during Durga Puja and Janmashtami.
