Curzon Hall, University of Dhaka

Begun in 1904, Curzon Hall blends European and Mughal styles and is now home to the University of Dhaka's science faculty.

Curzon Hall was named after Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India, who laid its foundation stone in 1904, around the time of the first partition of Bengal. It was intended as a town hall but became part of the University of Dhaka after the university opened in 1921. Its red-brick façade combines European proportions with Mughal arches and kiosks. The hall also has a place in the Language Movement: in 1948 students here protested when Urdu was declared the only state language.
