Cox's Bazar sea beach

On Bangladesh's southeastern coast, Cox's Bazar is both a working seaside town and a long meeting place between sand, surf and everyday life.

At Cox's Bazar, the Bay of Bengal rarely looks still. Waves fold over the broad sandy shore, while the tide steadily changes the distance between the water and the rows of beach chairs. The beach runs south towards Himchari and Inani, with busy access points near the town and quieter stretches farther along the coast. Its scale is impressive without needing a disputed world ranking. Look beyond the sunset photographs and a working coast comes into view. Fishing boats, drying nets and small food stalls connect the shoreline to livelihoods that continue outside the holiday season. Conditions vary along the beach: a calm-looking surface does not guarantee safe swimming, and local warning flags deserve attention. Rapid building, litter and pressure on coastal habitats complicate the resort's popularity. Carrying rubbish back, avoiding dunes and keeping clear of fishing operations are modest ways to be a better guest. The beach is a destination, but it is also somebody's workplace.
