Chittagonian, the language of Chattogram

Spoken by more than ten million people, Chittagonian is closely related to Bangla but often not understood by other Bangla speakers.

Chittagonian, or Chatgaiya, is spoken in Chattogram and parts of Cox's Bazar, and by large diaspora communities in the Middle East and elsewhere. It belongs to the eastern group of Indo-Aryan languages and shares much vocabulary with standard Bangla. Its sounds and grammar differ enough that many linguists treat it as a separate language rather than a dialect. It is mainly spoken rather than written, and is heard in local songs such as the popular Chatgaiya folk tunes.
