The Armenian Church of Dhaka
Built in 1781 in Armanitola, the Church of the Holy Resurrection recalls the Armenian merchants who once traded in Dhaka.
Armenian traders settled in Dhaka from the 17th century, dealing in jute, leather and other goods, and the neighbourhood of Armanitola takes its name from them. Their Church of the Holy Resurrection was completed in 1781. The whitewashed church, its graveyard and bell tower survive in a quiet compound in the busy old city. Only a handful of Armenians remain, but the church is cared for as a reminder of Dhaka's long history as a trading town.
