A February built around books
The Amar Ekushey Book Fair links the memory of the Language Movement with the everyday pleasures of browsing, publishing and meeting readers.
The Amar Ekushey Book Fair takes its name from the memory of 21 February and the Bengali Language Movement. Organised by Bangla Academy in Dhaka, it usually fills February with book stalls, launches and conversations. Its setting has extended from the academy grounds into nearby Suhrawardy Udyan. An early milestone came in 1972, when publisher Chittaranjan Saha offered books on the academy premises. What grew around such small beginnings became a major annual meeting between publishers and readers. New titles are often prepared with the fair in mind, making it an important part of the Bengali publishing calendar. For visitors, the appeal is not limited to buying. People compare editions, meet writers and introduce children to the habit of choosing a book. The fair's commemorative purpose gives these ordinary activities another meaning: a language defended in public is also sustained through reading and writing. Its value depends on room for different voices as much as the size of the crowd.
